During some of our darkest hours, it is difficult for us to further expose our hearts and our spirits to open ourselves to inspiration or soothing love and spiritual nourishment. And yet, these are the times when we most need them. Oftentimes the emotions we experience during these times may forge new paths in our lives that either lift us up through the ashes to new insights or pull us under into a pit of victimization and resentment.

When we are suffering in these times, the primary condition we are facing is separation. This may come in the form of loss, rejection, anger or hurt. So the key to turning on the light is not to change the condition which may have acted as the catalyst for the emotion of deep pain, but to recognize that our true suffering comes from us feeling alone, left out, singled out or that something has been taken from us. Regardless of how the feelings may have come to us, through others, or own thoughts, the healing that needs to be done is not for the specific incident that may have caused it, but for our underlying feeling that ANY condition could every separate us from our divine being and our Universal Oneness.

During our darkest nights it is helpful to put on the image of ourselves as a spiritual warrior that is facing the demons of our soul. As a warrior we know a couple of key facts about our mission. Firstly, that we are indestructible and secondly, that in order to win the battle we must get to the root of the turmoil. Batting aside the surface emotions by finding a way to dilute them with denial, numbing or projecting them onto others may briefly offer us some relief, but the dark legions will return over and over again, until we get to the leader and abolish him/her. The opposing leader is, of course, the condition we have accepted of separation from Universal Love.

In reality, this is an impossible condition, because if you are here thinking these thoughts, then so too is your divine identity. This can never leave you for it is you. But the condition of separateness is not an attribute of this divine identity, it is only a veil of illusion we have draped over our mind. We can know this because the condition of separateness can be changed, but our divine identity cannot. This unfailing divine identity is constantly available within us with our understanding and feelings of love, grace, compassion, peace and joy.

Picture yourself now, as a mighty warrior, donning your shield of forgiveness to yourself and others and your sword of love and compassion. As you prepare for battle, see yourself bathed in divine light as you kneel down in quiet contemplation of your battle plan. This light warms you with radiant energy and relief. The connection you feel to this light begins to fortify your spirit. As you move forward to relieve yourself of the thought, feeling and emotion that has raised up to create this separateness, you move forward with confidence. Each step becomes freer, easier, lighter, and more powerful.

When you reach your destination to slay the betrayer of your soul you see only a small child, afraid and trembling with fear. As you gaze upon the condition of separateness, this small frail child, you consider that you must annihilate this condition nonetheless. Suddenly, your sword turns into wings and your armor transposes to gossamer translucence. You embrace this child with love, compassion and forgiveness and the child transforms into you.

My dearest friends, do not ever feel alone. We have all faced these dark, dark hours and it is in your choice about how you face them that determines your outcome. To succumb to them with self-pity, anger, hate and victimization is to give away your divine gifts to something that ultimately has no power over you. It is not the person, place or thing that has caused this darkness but indeed the notion that we are alone, separate or divided away from our ever present divine essence. This is impossible and if you can only catch even a glimpse of this truth, then a way will begin to open up for you. The awareness of this point (that the condition is not the cause of suffering but your deeper thoughts about separateness), is the spiritual knight bowing down to receive the light of hope, truth and connection to your higher self.
